What is ESD? Why is it important?

You know that shock you sometimes get when walking across a carpet? That is ESD. Also known as, "Electrostatic Discharge."
Why is it important when dealing with computers? ESD can damage components within a computer and sometimes completely destroy a system. 

When working with internal components of a computer or device then always wear a grounded wrist strap or have the device on a grounded mat.
